your father-son holiday sounds wonderful, and our own mother-daughter trip to Italy over Easter wasn’t bad either – but what really made our spring break was travelling to Geneva and hearing you play Schumann. Your blog entry says what I couldn’t find the words for when we came to see you in the intermission: the music just happened, fresh at every moment – it didn’t seem a “performance” at all, not something in a long row of admirable, virtuosic and moving versions by yourself (or another excellent cellist), but like something important that was being said for the first time and would not be said again, so that as a listener you try to catch every “word” and are just happy to be in that particular place at that particular time, as the concerto and the wonderful colours and discoveries of the Bach encore unfolded.

Today we re-listened to the concert broadcast on Radio Suisse Romande, and my daughter said: “Mama, we were there!” I guess that’s what every concert should make you say, really – but they are rare.
